The Three Lionesses of England on Monday morning defeated Nigeria’s Super Falcons 4-2 on penalties in the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
The round of 16 match played in Brisbane ended in scoreless draw after 90 minutes and extra time with both teams unable to find the breakthrough in the grueling encounter.
The English team ended the game with 10 players after Lauren James was shown the red card in the 87th minute for a rough challenge on a Nigerian player.
The Super Falcons dominated the encounter but lacked the cutting edge in front of goal.
The England scored their four of the five spot kicks through Beth England, Rachel Daly, Alex Greenwood and Chloe Kelly.
The Nigerians missed two of their spot kicks while Rashidat Ajibade and Christy Ucheigbe were on target for the record African champions.
While the West Africans head home, England moved to the next stage and will play the winner of the round of 16 game between Colombia and Jamaica in the quarter final on August 12.
