Algerian Footballer Faces Trial In France For Alleged Incitement

Youcef Atal, an Algerian international footballer who plays for Ligue 1 side Nice, is set to go on trial in France on charges of inciting hatred.

The accusations stem from a video he shared on his Instagram account, with 3.2 million followers, shortly after the October 7 attack by Hamas militants on Israel, resulting in 1,139 casualties.

The 27-year-old defender, promptly deleted the post and issued an apology however, he was suspended by his club during the investigation.

Civil actions have been brought against the footballer by two associations, the International League against Racism and anti-Semitism (Licra) and the Jewish Observatory of France.

While under judicial supervision and prohibited from traveling abroad except for professional football, Atal’s club suspended him “until further notice,” and the professional football league imposed a seven-match ban.

Some of his Algerian teammates have pleaded for leniency, arguing that Atal apologized and did not watch the video until the end before posting it.
