Alleged Coup Plot: Sierra Leone’s Ex-President Begins Exile In Nigeria

The ex-President of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai Koroma, is set to temporarily move to Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, pending approval from President Maada Bio, following his alleged involvement in a failed coup plot.

A court in Freetown charged Koroma with four offenses, including treason, related to the attempted military overthrow in November, as the West African nation continues to recover from the 1991-2002 civil war that claimed over 50,000 lives.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) facilitated Koroma’s temporary relocation to Nigeria, as part of an agreement to drop charges against him stemming from the alleged coup.

Despite being released on bail and placed under house arrest in Freetown until January 17, the government expressed its willingness to dismiss all charges if Koroma agrees to leave the country temporarily.

A reminder letter from ECOWAS President Omar Touray to President Bio emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to hosting Koroma temporarily and highlighted the importance of ensuring continued payments for Koroma’s allowances and entitlements as a former head of state.
