Benin Republic And Togo: Federal Government Suspends Recognition Of Degrees

The Federal Government has decided to suspend the accreditation and evaluation of degree certificates originating from Benin Republic and Togo.

This decision comes in response to a disturbing report that exposed the swift acquisition of a degree from a university in Benin Republic in less than two months.

Augustina Obilor-Duru, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, expressed concern over the use of unscrupulous methods by some Nigerians to obtain degrees, exploiting the end goal of securing job opportunities for which they lack qualifications.

This suspension will endure until the conclusion of a thorough investigation involving the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education of Nigeria, the concerned ministries in the two countries, the Department of State Security Services (DSSS), and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC).

The Ministry is urging Nigerians to contribute information to assist the committee in finding lasting solutions to prevent future incidents.

Periodic warnings have been issued by the Ministry and the National Universities Commission (NUC) against engaging with such institutions. The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to reviewing strategies to close loopholes, refine processes, and deal decisively with any complicit officials in its ongoing efforts.
