Fire Erupts At TCN Substation In Lagos Following Transformer Explosion

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported a fire incident caused by the explosion of a capacitor voltage transformer on the Maryland-Ikorodu 132/33kV transmission line 2.

The TCN cites ageing and insulation failure as the reasons for the sudden failure of the Maryland-Ikorodu 132kV Line 2 Yellow phase capacitor voltage transformer.

According to Ms Ndidi Mbah, the TCN spokesperson, the isolation of Maryland-Ilupeju 132kV line 1, the power source for the substation, was necessary.

Despite efforts to extinguish the fire, challenges arose due to the presence of oil-immersed equipment near the explosion site.

The Lagos State Fire Service intervened at 8:45 pm, successfully extinguishing the fire by 8:55 pm.

The TCN emphasizes its commitment to addressing such incidents by actively pursuing the reconductoring and rehabilitation of all its 132kV transmission lines and switchgears nationwide.”
