Gang Rape Case: India’s Supreme Court Blocks Early Release Of 11 Men

India’s Supreme Court has rejected the early release of 11 men convicted of gang-raping Bilkis Bano and murdering her relatives during the 2002 riots in Gujarat.

The court ordered the men to surrender to prison authorities within two weeks, dismissing their plea for liberty protection.

Bilkis Bano, now in her forties, was brutally attacked while five months pregnant during the 2002 violence, which resulted in the death of nearly 2,000 people.

Seven of Bilkis Bano’s relatives, including her three-year-old daughter, were killed in the riots.

The men, convicted in 2008, were released by the Gujarat government in August 2022, leading to widespread condemnation.

The Supreme Court stated on Monday that Gujarat lacked the authority to reduce the sentence, as the trial had been moved to Mumbai.
