Gustave Eiffel’s Death Anniversary: Eiffel Tower Shuts Down Amid Staff Strike

The iconic Eiffel Tower, a global tourist hotspot, closed its doors as employees staged a strike, protesting against the current management, according to the hard-left CGT union.

The strike, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of engineer Gustave Eiffel’s death, aimed to address concerns about the tower’s management practices.

The CGT union criticized the Eiffel Tower’s operator, SETE, stating that it was headed for disaster, the union also claimed that the management was implementing an overly ambitious and unsustainable business model, relying on an inflated estimate of future visitor numbers while underestimating construction costs.

SETE, in response, apologized to visitors for the inconvenience and advised those with electronic tickets for the day to check their email for further information regarding their bookings.

The Eiffel Tower, Paris’s most renowned landmark, attracts nearly seven million visitors annually, with approximately three-quarters of them being foreigners, according to its website. Although the COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant drop in numbers due to closures and travel restrictions, the figures recovered to 5.9 million in 2022.

Engineer Gustave Eiffel, the visionary behind the Eiffel Tower, passed away on December 27, 1923, at the age of 91.
