Japan: Prime Minister To Dismiss Four Ministers Over Corruption Allegations

Japan’s Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, is likely to dismiss four ministers, including his right-hand man, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, and Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura, in response to a significant party financing scandal.

The decision, expected to be announced at a news conference at 6:15 pm local time, follows a sharp decline in Kishida’s ratings since assuming office in October 2021.

The ministers, associated with the largest faction in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, face allegations of receiving around 500 million yen ($3.4m) in kickbacks, with prosecutors also investigating the involvement of former Olympics minister Seiko Hashimoto.

The faction was previously led by the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
