Senate President Swears In Lalong, Declares Two Other Seats Vacant

Senate President Godswill Akpabio officially inaugurated Simon Lalong, the former governor of Plateau State, as the new senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District.

Lalong, a member of the All Progressives Congress, replaced Napoleon Bali of the People’s Democratic Party, whose November 7, 2023, election was nullified by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, thereby declaring Lalong as the rightful winner of the February 25th senatorial poll.

The senator, who had resigned as the Minister of Labour Employment and Productivity the day before, expressed his long-standing desire to become a senator after concluding his governorship tenure in May 2023.

Meanwhile, on the same day, Akpabio declared the senatorial seats for Ebonyi-South and Yobe East vacant.

The Ebonyi-South seat was previously held by former governor Dave Umahi, who now serves as the Minister of Works in President Tinubu’s cabinet, and the Yobe East seat became vacant when Ibrahim Giadam accepted Tinubu’s appointment as the Minister of Police Affairs.

Akpabio invoked Section 68 (1)(d) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to declare the two seats vacant and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to initiate the by-election process to fill these vacancies.
