Senegal: Supreme Court Rejects Opposition Leader Sonko’s Appeal In Libel Case

Senegal’s Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal of opposition figure Ousmane Sonko in his defamation case.

This ruling poses a significant threat to his eligibility to run in the upcoming presidential elections.

The court upheld the six-month suspended sentence and fines, confirming Sonko’s loss on all counts, according to state lawyer El Hadji Diouf.

Sonko, who filed his candidacy papers while in custody last month, faces a substantial setback as the court’s decision renders him banned from participating in an election.

The 49-year-old, currently in jail since July on insurrection charges, was also removed from the electoral rolls.

Having endured multiple legal battles over the past two years, including charges of libel and rape, which he vehemently denies, Sonko’s cases have incited deadly violence in Senegal.
