Senegalese Soldiers In Casamance: Anti-Tank Mine Claims Lives Of Four

Senegal’s army reported that four soldiers lost their lives and three others were injured in Casamance’s southern region after their vehicle struck an anti-tank mine.

The incident occurred near the border with Gambia, where security operations against separatist rebels of the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) have been ongoing for months.

Providing no further details, the army has been actively countering the MFDC, a separatist group striving for independence in the region that shares borders with Guinea-Bissau.

The MFDC, one of Africa’s oldest active rebellions, initiated a low-intensity separatist campaign in 1982, resulting in several thousand casualties.

The conflict remained relatively dormant until 2021 when Senegal launched a significant offensive to expel the rebels.
