South Korean Islands: North Korea Fires Over 200 Artillery Shells.

North Korea launched more than 200 artillery shells in the vicinity of two South Korean islands, leading to an evacuation order for residents on one of them, as confirmed by Seoul’s defense ministry.

The firing occurred in the areas of Jangsan-got in the northern part of Baengnyeong Island and the northern regions of Yeonpyeong Island.

This incident comes after North Korea’s previous artillery attack in November 2010, where 170 shells were fired at Yeonpyeong Island, resulting in casualties.

Tensions between the two Koreas have been strained, with North Korea solidifying its nuclear status and engaging in advanced ICBM tests.

During year-end policy meetings, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un warned of a potential nuclear attack on South Korea and emphasized the need for a military buildup, stating that armed conflict could break out any time.  In 2023, North Korea successfully launched a reconnaissance satellite, reportedly with assistance from Russia, leading to heightened regional concerns
