Spain in the early hours of Saturday qualified for the last eight of the ongoing FIFA Women’s World Cup with a comprehensive 5-1 thrashing of Switzerland in Auckland, New Zealand.
Aitana Bonmati put La Roja with a cool finish in the fifth minute. But the Swiss were back on level terms six minutes later when Lala Codina put the ball in her own net.
Jorge Vilda’s side scored three goals in a 28 minutes blitz through Alba Redondo and Aitana Bommati while Codina made up for her earlier mistake with the fourth on the stroke of half time.
Jennifer Hermoso scored the fifth for Spain in the 75th minute to end the match as a contest.
The Spaniards are the first side to reach the last eight and will meet the winner of Sunday’s game between the Netherlands and South Africa in next Friday’s quarter final in Wellington.
